Journey #18

When we cross a bridge, we are travelling from one point to another. That can be physically, as in actually crossing a river or a busy road or it could be more of an emotional, mental, or spiritual change in your life journey, which is what I am looking at today.
It’s a common phrase “I’ll cross that bridge when I get there,” meaning that you won’t worry about something until you have to, but what if you find yourself crossing that bridge in your life and you still have no idea which direction you want to go in! What if you are standing right in the middle of that bridge and you have hit that point where you must choose. If you carry on forward, you are stepping into the unknown – and that can be scary. You could choose to go back to whatever place you came from, back to what is known and comfortable even if it is no longer where you want to be. Or you could just stay stuck in the middle – neither moving forwards, nor backwards.
Being stuck in the middle is, in my opinion, probably the worst place to be. I can say that from experience. I recently had to make a choice like this and it was definitely not an easy choice. In fact, my choice to move forward, away from where I have spent the last few years, actually felt like I was going backwards, but whilst I was stuck in the middle, unable to choose… that was the hardest part of all. To make my decision, I pretended I was on an actual bridge. Ahead, it was dimly lit, but I could make out some of the things I know I want to do and am more than capable of doing. I turned around and looked behind me. I looked at this place that was so shiny bright it hurt my eyes, but I knew it and I loved it. I knew I could carry on in that place too, but it would be incredibly hard work that would take all my time. Then I considered staying in the middle, just camping out in the middle of the bridge, stagnant. Achieving nothing. Gosh! That was depressing.
Once I made my decision – it became easy. I accepted the change and I now know it was the right one as I realised that however much I wanted to stay in the place I had come from, it was in a position that I was not ready for.
So, In Faith, In Trust, In Truth and In Respect, I moved over the bridge into the unknown.
