Animal Medicine #21
In the 18th Century it is estimated that there were around 60 million buffalo roaming the Great Plains yet a short 100 years or so later, in 1889, there were only 541 remaining. Human greed, White Man greed, White Man’s desire to decimate the indigenous people through starvation, almost brought these magnificent animals to extinction, and at that time it was said by an indigenous chief that “the heart of the people fell to the ground.”
Now, there are now over half a million buffalo in the US, with only 15,000 of those being considered wild. It’s only a fraction of those huge herds, but it is stepping in the right direction for these magnificent creatures.

When life is difficult, and your burdens are heavy, buffalo energy is something you can lean upon. When you feel trapped and there is a storm all around you, buffalo has the strength to help you persevere and survive. He can resurrect your drive, determination, and hope. He teaches patience, loyalty, and gratitude.
The Buffalo stated that it is easy to be patient with those who are more powerful but that when enduring injuries from the powerless, it is an opportunity to show real patience and virtue, however uncomfortable it may be.
